Somabula is a 400 hectare nature reserve located a few kilometres south of the small mining town of Cullinan, only one hour from Johannesburg and 40 minutes from Pretoria. Somabula is home to antelope as well as giraffe, zebra, kudu, impala, eland, water-buck, wildebeest and all kinds of smaller animals such as warthog, duikers and reptiles. Somabula does not have a set mountain biking trail but you can create your own exciting route throughout the reserve using the jeep track, 4×4 track and the natural single track that the zebra develop. The zebra trails flow throughout the reserve and head towards watering holes, where you will view some game and some of the bird life, or up onto the mountains where the views are breath-taking. Want to spend some more time on this tranquil and beautiful reserve? Make use of their gorgeous little chalets, refurbished Ox-wagons or the campsite that is completely off the grid and relies on solar power and solar water heating. Day visitors can make use of the lapa and braai facilities at no additional cost as long as they are booked ahead of time.
Oi!! Watch out for thorns if you wonder off of the Jeep and Zebra trails.
One bottle of water or two?
You will be able to cycle anything from 3 km to 30 km (follow the map and create your own trails).
How should I prep my bike?
All purpose chain lube is recommended and tire pressure should be relatively low for that added traction on the rocky climbs.
When can I ride?
Monday – Sunday: 08h00 – 17h00
Please give the reserve a call ahead of time if you would like to ride during the week so gate codes can be given to you as there is poor reception en route. Please keep riding groups to a maximum of four to enhance your viewing experience and so the animals do not get frightened.
Small change or personal loan?
R50 per person (free if you are staying there).
Where do I park?
Safe and secure parking.
Do I need to find a bush?
No need, toilet facilities are available. Please ask at reception.
