Wellness Wednesdays: Oil Pulling

Have you heard about oil pulling? We did a few months ago and have been trying it out since.

Oil pulling is also known as “kavala” or “gundusha” and is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that uses pure oils. It is known to improve oral health  by pulling toxins from the body.

The benefits of oil pulling:

  • helps with bad breath
  • reduces and prevents plaque build up
  • soothes sensitive teeth
  • lowers inflammation
  • healthier gums
  • brightens and whitens teeth
  • detoxifies
  • reduces allergies and clears sinus
  • reduces congestion in the chest
  • helps soothe and prevent stomach issues

What must I do?

You can use any oil but it should be plant-based such as a sesame or sunflower oil. We use coconut oil as we prefer the taste and it has strong antibacterial properties too. Put a tablespoon of the oil in your mouth and swish it around in your mouth, pushing it through your teeth, for twenty minutes. It is best to do so on an empty stomach and before you have brushed your teeth (whilst you’re showering, checking emails first thing in the morning, packing lunchboxes etc). Spit it into the bin or into the toilet if you are using coconut oil as it will solidify and block your drains if you spit it into the sink.

We have definitely noticed that our mouths feel fresher and clean afterwards and that we have brighter and shinier teeth.

Have you tried oil pulling? Do you think you will?
