Wellness Wednesdays: Reducing the bloat

We have all experienced that uncomfortable feeling of bloating. Feeling tired, struggling to zip up your pants, uncomfortable gas and a stomach that feels “hard” is a condition that you can avoid pretty easily. The real cause of this physical discomfort that also presents itself physically is intestinal gas.

 Some ways to eliminate a bloated belly

  • Rule out allergies: Food allergies (such as wheat or gluten) or intolerance (such as lactose) can cause gas and bloating. Read our article here about distinguishing between a food allergy and a food intolerance.
  • Eat slowly: Eating too quickly and not properly chewing your food can cause you to swallow air which leads to bloating.  The digestion process begins with the saliva in your mouth so by chewing your food more you are decreasing the chances of bloating.
  • Avoid starchy foods: avoiding white bread, pasta, rice, fried foods or anything made with whole-whear flour which is naturally harder for the body to digest is recommended.
  • Avoid fizzy drinks: this one is pretty self-explanatory.
  • Eliminate dairy for a few days: Dairy is a common culprit when it comes to indigestion and intestinal stress as it is very difficult for the body to digest. Eliminate it from your diet for a few days and see how you feel.
  • Stay hydrated: Lots of people do not drink enough water. Water keeps your hydrated and helps keep your bowel movements regular. Read our post on the importance of water here and read how to calculate how much water you need to drink per day here.
  • Eat smaller meals, regularly: this will place less stress on your digestion system and can help to speed up your metabolism.
  • Increase your physical activity: Moving, even just a little bit (more benefits here) will help relieve your digestive system and keep your bowel movements regular.
  • Listen to your body: Do you feel bloated or have stomach cramps after you eat something? Your body is trying to tell you it is not happy. Take note of which foods cause you to feel uncomfortable and avoid these.
